Last year students designed work clothes that were inspired by five sights in Istanbul. This year the task involved designing workwear for the employees of two museums in Istanbul and producing the corresponding textile collections.

The two Erasmus students, Marco Coppola and Chiara Lauria from the Italian Vanvitelli University occupied themselves with the Istanbul Modern and the Arter and based their workwear design on the architecture of the museum buildings. Prof. Dr. Sema Yalçın, who supervised the project, is convinced that every type of architecture, whether traditional or contemporary, can serve as a creative spark for fashion designers, because architecture also concentrates on shape and design. The aim was to create a three-dimensional item of clothing out of two-dimensional fabric. To this end, the students had to occupy themselves with the buildings and the function of the employees they were making the clothes for. “In the realm of designing workwear, students must consider some challenges such as comfort, usability, alignment with the institution’s identity and adherence to the requirements of the job. Throughout the entire design process, students must grapple with these challenges and develop solutions through their designs,“ stated Yalçın.

Elif Icbilen Welsh, International Sales and Marketing Director at VOG Tekstil, confirmed that such cooperations are good for the industry, because young people always put fresh wind in the sails: “Here at VOG Tekstil we are very keen on these projects to support Education – educators & students for the future of the industry. We started this project last year and will carry it on for years to come.”

Up until now the designs were based on purely hypothetical assignments, the designs created did not actually become the uniforms of the museum employees, but Yalçın is hopeful: “Why not in the future?“
