D – The writing instrument specialist, Klio-Eterna, carried out the EMAS certification in 2023 and according to own accounts since January 11, 2024 is one of the first writing instrument manufacturers to carry the EMAS logo. EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) is a community system for environmental management and environmental industrial inspection of the European Union. Companies and organisations that align their management towards sustainability and which would like to continually improve their environment-related performance can become certified following a multi-phase process.
The EMAS certification encompasses all of the requirements of the international environmental management standard ISO 14001, enhanced by additional norms.
The writing instrument manufacturer, Klio-Eterna, which produces 100% of its goods in Germany, manufacturers around 100 different models of ballpoint pens in eleven product families and excels with its high vertical range of manufacture. The few bought-in parts and materials are sourced regionally as far as possible to avoid long transport routes. Furthermore, according to own accounts, the company has been continually reducing its resource consumption and has been investing in sustainability for years. For instance, the production location has borne the seal “climate neutral location” since 2021. According to Klio-Eterna, the share of ballpoint pens made from biobased or recycled plastic currently accounts for around 35% of the overall revenue.
Klio-Eterna has set itself further ambitious environmental goals for the coming years: In this way, the energy consumption and thus the CO2 emissions are to be reduced further by improving the production process, implementing waste heat and renovating the buildings. The climate neutral production of electricity using the in-house photovoltaic system is also to be further expanded and the amount of waste continually reduced.
