D – The growing number of eCommerce orders is generating an increasing amount of packaging waste. In order to reduce this down to a minimum in future and improve the transport capacity, mymuesli, a supplier of individualisable organic muesli has analysed and re-aligned its entire packaging system together with the packaging specialist, Smurfit Kappa.
Boris Maschmann, CEO of Smurfit Kappa in the D-A-CH region stated, “The outcome of the analysis of the processes at mymuesli was that due to the meanwhile high demand for mymuesli products, packing the goods by hand is no longer efficient and that economies of scale don’t show a full effect. We thus suggested that the company invests in a modern packaging machine.” Ultimately, the decision fell in favour of the CPV-Everest manufactured by the company Sparck Technologies, a packaging machine for continuous corrugated paper with an integrated 3D scanner and a capacity of 1,100 packed items an hour. Philipp Kraiss, Co-CEO and co-founder of mymuesli commented, “The extensive experience of Smurfit Kappa in the packaging area helped us make the right decision. This resulted not only in a long-term investment in greener value chains, but also offers a fast amortisation.”
According to mymuesli, the savings gained are significant. For example, among other things packaging waste can be reduced by around 50% and 30% more transport volume per lorry can be achieved. The company currently dispatches goods to nine European countries. 20% of the packaging material for the box and the filling material has been rendered superfluous. Furthermore, any ensuing waste corrugated paper is recycled, which corresponds to a material saving of approx. 30%. Moreover, due to the reduction in volume thanks to package sizes being optimally aligned to suit the shipping contents, 30% more packaging fit inside one truck load. In addition, 13,500 rolls of packaging tape can be saved a year.
