The aim of the new regulation is to keep non-conform and unsafe products away from the EU market and reduce the risks for the consumers. Serious market participants, who deal with the theme product safety in a responsible manner are to be protected and conditions are to be created that enable fair competition to prevail. A stricter market monitoring is planned, as are improved explanatory measures for the companies regarding their obligations and a closer, cross-border collaboration between the authorities that are commissioned with the task of enforcing these regulations.

The directive has to be implemented by the member states within two years, i.e. by 16 July 2021 at the latest.
