According to the official account, in the year 2018 the number of businesses certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) rose by 14.6% from 5,024 up to 5,760. The certified companies are by now spread across 64 countries. As stated in a press release the growth is tangible in all segments, in both the production and consumer sector. The countries and regions with the highest percentual growth in the number of GOTS certifications in the year 2018 are: Bangladesh (+29%), North America (+25%), Pakistan (+23%) and South Korea (+23%). With regards to the overall number of GOTS certified companies the highest growth was registered in India (+315), followed by Bangladesh (+155) and Europa (+98). The top ten countries in 2018 were India (1,973), Bangladesh (689), Turkey (519), Germany (500), Italy (340), China (301), Pakistan (238), Portugal (215), USA (127) and South Korea (85). More than 2 million people work in GOTS certified businesses worldwide.
The non-profit making organisation GOTS is recognised as the leading global standard for the entire processing of clothes and home textiles made of organic fibres – from the post-harvest processing, to the spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing and furnishing through to the picking and packing. The GOTS technical environmental requirements define a very high level and at the same time demands the observance of social criteria. The aim: to define worldwide recognised requirements, which guarantee the organic status of textiles and thus offer credible product safety for the consumers.
