CDN – Gildan Activewear Inc. is donating 3.5 mil. US Dollars (approx. 3.2 mil. Euros) to community projects in Honduras, the aim of which is to promote and improve the education, health, living and housing conditions in the North of the country. Gildan is being awarded the money by the Honduran Government as a grant for its participation in the employment programme “Con Chamba Vivís Mejor” (“We live better with a job”).
According to company sources, the textile specialist created over 7,000 new jobs in Honduras in 2014 alone and is thus the leading employer in the region. The donation in diverse local projects – including a housing programme, the expansion of a hospital and educational scholarships – aims to improve the living conditions of the workers. Furthermore, part of the donated funds are being used to promote projects that were jointly selected together with the first lady of Honduras, Ana Garcia de Hernandez.
