D – After last year’s record edition, this year’s edition of Spiel – from October 13-16, 2016 – was once again able to register strong growth: 174,000 gaming fans, buyers and licensees from all over the globe (2015: 162,000) travelled to Essen to visit this year’s edition of the international gaming days Spiel’16 with Comic Action that is organised by the Bonn-based publishing company, Friedhelm Merz Verlag. At the largest and most successful Spiel in the 34-year history of the event, 1,021 exhibitors (2015: 911) from 50 nations presented more than 1,200 new games – board and card games, that as a counterbalance to the digital hectic are currently experiencing a boom.
With a 60% foreign share of exhibitors, the trade show was more international than ever before. The according to own accounts world’s biggest public fair for parlour games occupied seven exhibition halls this year instead of three and had to open its doors earlier than actually planned on all four days of the show to cope with the rush of visitors. Prior to the Christmas business, according to the official figures, the industry is expected to experience an increase in turnover of approx. 10% for the second year on the trot.
The next Spiel with Comic Action is scheduled to take place at the Essen Exhibition Centre from October 26-29, 2017.
