D – On February 7, 2014 the Plagiarius was awarded during an international press conference at the Ambiente, the consumer good trade fair in Frankfurt, for the 38th time. The Aktion Plagiarius e.V. has been awarding the negative distinction to the manufacturers and distributors of particularly brazen fakes since 1977. The aim of the association is to put the spotlight on the unfair business practices of both brand pirates and plagiarists. The fact that products are awarded with the Plagiarius doesn’t imply whether the respective replica is legally allowed or not.
According to the official figures, the EU customs officers confiscated almost 40 mil. copyright-breaching products at the outside borders of the EU in 2012, the value of which totalled 1 billion Euros. Around 72% of the confiscated goods came from China and Hong Kong. The top ten countries of origin include the United Arab Emirates (8.37%), Turkey and numerous eastern European countries. The contractors or importers of the fakes are often the industry countries themselves.
The Plagiarius is awarded by a panel of judges that alternates every year and which comprises of representatives from diverse areas such as design, commercial patent protection, the industry, trade associations and the media. The jury of the 38th Plagiarius met up on January 11, 2014 and awarded from a total of 51 entries, three main prizes, three special prizes and seven distinctions of the same ranking.
